Dana has been a licensed insurance broker since the mid-’70s and serves as CEO of United Western Insurance Brokers, Inc., which has offices in Seattle and Los Angeles.
Dana’s focus is Agency Management, Agency Operations, and Technology.
Because of his business owner experience, he loves assisting other business owners and successful families to strategically navigate their insurance and risk management needs. Using his thoughtful, seasoned methods, Dana is often complimented by the people he serves. Some say that he’s “someone who really gets it.” Dana says that he loves messy and complicated situations because they allow him to draw on his natural abilities as a problem solver. He attributes this unique ability to two things, his upbringing as the youngest in a large family and his success in learning how to turn the tables on dyslexia by using his special gift as a problem-solving tool.

In 1975 Dana worked for The Aetna Property & Casualty Insurance Company where he was trained as a Commercial Lines Underwriter and also received certification as a Fire Protection Engineer. With that foundation and a few more years of seasoning, Dana transitioned into brokerage and in 1990 teamed with several longtime friends to create one of the country’s first agency clusters and named his division United Western Insurance Brokers, Inc. In 2012 Dana and his wife Gina, along with UWIB established an affiliation United Agencies.
In 2018, as the US financial services sector began to embrace new and Advanced Technology, including Artificial Intelligence tools, UWIB and five other broad-minded agents formed a new cluster, ALKEME INSURANCE.
The UWIB division of ALKEME works with businesses and successful families across the Nation. Most of the company’s business clients have unusual or unique risk management and insurance needs. The owners and key employees of those companies frequently become clients of UWIB for their personal insurance. UWIB distinguishes itself through its cutting edge technology and seasoned consultation which combined, help to manage some very complex property, casualty and benefits needs. UWIB provides user-friendly and technologically advanced digital tools for all of its clients.
The company maintains physical offices in Seattle and Southern California and employs WAHVE support teams in the Eastern timezone. The company serves Importers, Exporters, Manufacturers, the Entertainment industry, the Coffee industry, the Commercial Marine industry, and Professionals in Technology, Software, Hardware, Medicine, and Law.
In their spare time, Dana and Gina Coates enjoy their animals, travel, physical fitness and the great outdoors. Dana previously raced Porsche & Ferrari automobiles and although he no longer races competitively, he is definitely “a car guy.” Gina is Dana’s rock, and his greatest cheerleader.
In addition to supporting Gina who is the owner of the agency, Dana has served on several non-profit boards including Boy Scouts of America, The University Club of Pasadena, The Rotary Club, and he currently sits on the Board of a Southern California based Financial Institution. Dana has volunteered at Huntington Memorial Hospital, and recently retired from The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association after volunteering for more than thirty years.
Dana & Gina split their time between Los Angeles and Seattle, they have two married children and three Grand Puppies.
