The roots of United Western Insurance Brokers follow the lineage of its founder, Dana Coates.

Dana’s father, Robert Coates, Jr. paved the way for his son’s business endeavors in Insurance and Risk Management.

In 1927, Robert Coates, Sr., along with his wife and son Robert Coates, Jr., moved from Hopkinsville Kentucky to Pasadena. Robert Coates, Sr. opened a pharmacy in the heart of what’s now known as Old Town Pasadena. The pharmacy continued to operate until the 1960’s, and was a fixture of the early Pasadena community.

Around the time that Robert Coates, Jr. was in high school, he met Jimmy Ingham as an acquaintance. Jimmy had been working in finance since 1918 in Los Angeles. Not knowing it at the time, Jimmy had already laid the foundation for a future business partnership.

A third person, Gleeson “TIGE” Payne, a well known Pasadena local, was the missing piece needed to complete the partnership now known as Ingham, Coates & Payne.

In 1977, Dana joined the prestigious firm his father, Jimmy, and Gleeson “TIGE” Payne had formed in Pasadena.
